The government has launched a nationwide post-flood recovery and mitigation exercise to restore affected communities and reduce the risk of future flooding.
At a national update on the recent floods, Director General of Joint Operations of the Ghana Armed Forces, Forster Okae-Yeboah, said the military will lead large-scale clean-up and restoration efforts, focusing on sanitation, public safety and the prevention of water-borne diseases.
He acknowledged the support of private sector partners for providing logistics, equipment and technical expertise to support the exercise.
The operation will also include the removal of structures built in waterways or identified as posing immediate safety risks.
Presidential Spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu announced that the government has allocated GH¢350 million for emergency relief, reconstruction and long-term flood mitigation measures.
He said displaced persons will receive support as affected communities are gradually restored.
The announcement came as President John Dramani Mahama hosted Sierra Leonean President Julius Maada Bio in Accra for bilateral talks.
President Bio, who chairs the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Authority, expressed condolences to Ghana over the recent floods, while the two leaders discussed climate change, disaster preparedness, regional security, governance and economic integration within ECOWAS.
