The organisers of the Telecel Ghana Music Awards have assured industry players and fans that the much-talked-about Group of the Year category has not been scrapped, adding that nominees for the category in this year’s awards will be announced soon.

Speaking in an interview with Kwame Dadzie and Doreen Avio on Hitz FM, Robert Klah, Head of Public Events and Communications at Charterhouse, addressed concerns that emerged after the category was missing from the initial nominees announcement for the 27th edition of the awards. He clarified that the Group of the Year category is among a few yet-to-be-announced categories, dismissing claims that it has been cancelled.

“Oh yea, it will be announced this week. It could even be today. The Group of the Year category has not been cancelled. I never announced that it has been cancelled. What I said was that there were some categories we had not released and those categories will be released,” he explained.

He further revealed that other categories still to be announced include African Song and Music for Good, noting that the latter is typically introduced later but will be brought forward this year for a specific reason.

“Music for Good, we usually announce it later but we are going to announce it early because we want people to understand what happens in that space. So if you announce it early then people will see that these are the works that have been done. It can inspire people to use their music to do good,” he noted.

While concerns have been raised about the delay, Robert indicated that there are internal factors behind the timing, although not all details can be made public.

“There are quite a number of things; I may not be able to share. I understand that for media you are interested in information but then again it is not everything that you would want to share. But the reality is that we did announce that some of the categories that were not announced would be announced later,” he added.

Since the nominees announcement, some artistes, including Keche and Lali x Lola, have voiced concerns over the absence of the Group of the Year category. Industry stakeholders have also argued that removing the category would be a wrong move, especially based on claims of a lack of competition.
