The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has instructed Professor Johnson Nyarko Boampong to continue serving as Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast (UCC) until further notice.

This decision comes amidst ongoing investigations into the termination of his appointment.

The directive follows a decision by the UCC Governing Council to terminate Professor Boampong’s tenure, which had allegedly been extended by two years beyond its initial four-year term.

The council declared the extension null and void, prompting conflicting interpretations of Professor Boampong’s status.

“In the absence of any contrary communication from the UCC Council, Professor Johnson Nyarko Boampong is to remain at his post as Vice-Chancellor until GTEC completes its examination of the issues and communicates its decision,” stated a statement released by GTEC on Friday, August 2.

The Commission, underscoring its pivotal role in overseeing the management of tertiary institutions, directed UCC management to provide all relevant documents pertaining to Professor Boampong’s renewal and termination of appointment by August 9, 2024.

This includes correspondence, legal proceedings, and official communications related to the matter. The UCC management is expected to provide all documents that can shed light on the process of Professor Boampong’s renewal and subsequent termination of appointment.

The statement affirmed, “The continuity of university operations is paramount,” underscoring GTEC’s unwavering commitment to ensuring procedural integrity and stability within Ghana’s tertiary education sector.

The developments signal a critical phase in resolving the administrative dispute at UCC, with stakeholders eagerly anticipating GTEC’s forthcoming decisions on Professor Boampong’s tenure as Vice-Chancellor.
