Highlife icon Gyedu-Blay Ambolley has praised contemporary musician Kofi Kinaata for preserving the originality of Ghana’s music through his lyrical and highlife style.

In an exclusive interview with Ghana Weekend at the Afro Gastro Festival held on Saturday, October 18, the legend commended Kofi Kinaata for following in the footsteps of his musical forebears.

“I love what Kofi Kinaata is doing because he’s following his seniors, playing the highlife, rapping into it, singing into it,” Ambolley said.

The legendary musician contrasted Kinaata’s style with that of many young artistes who, he believes, have drifted toward reggae and dancehall influences.

“The rest are playing dancehall, they’re playing reggae. Dancehall came from our brothers and sisters from Jamaica. But here, at the roots, we have something here,” he stressed.

Ambolley urged young Ghanaian artistes to reconnect with their cultural roots rather than copy foreign genres.

“If you leave your own and start copying somebody, then you become a copier,” he warned.
