Ghanaian socialite and musician, Mona Faiz Montrage, widely known as Hajia 4Real, is expected to regain her freedom on Thursday, May 22, after completing a one-year and one-day prison sentence at the Federal Detention Center in Philadelphia, United States.
The internet personality and singer, who once enjoyed a thriving career in Ghana’s entertainment and fashion circles, was convicted in the US for her role in a high profile romance scam that targeted vulnerable individuals online.
Montrage pleaded guilty to conspiracy to receive stolen money in February 2024 after being extradited to the US from the UK in May 2023.
According to US prosecutors, Montrage was part of a West Africa-based criminal enterprise that orchestrated romance scams and other internet fraud schemes, defrauding victims mostly older, single Americans of over $2 million.
Court documents revealed that she personally received over $100,000 in fraud proceeds, which were deposited into her US-based bank accounts under false pretenses.
During her sentencing on Friday, June 28, 2024, the court accepted a proposed timeline by her legal team for her return to Ghana following the completion of her sentence. Her lawyers emphasised her willingness to turn a new leaf and contribute positively to society upon her return.
The anticipated return of Hajia 4Real is already stirring conversations on social media, with mixed reactions from the public. While some have expressed sympathy and called for a second chance, others remain critical of her involvement in fraudulent activity and its impact on Ghana’s international image.
Montrage, once a celebrated influencer known for her luxurious lifestyle and music ventures, including the hit single Fine Girl, has largely remained out of the public eye since her arrest. Her case reignited discussions around the accountability of public figures and the growing concern over internet fraud in West Africa.
If her expected return to Ghana materialises as planned, it remains to be seen how she will navigate the spotlight once again this time, with a story that has left a controversial mark on her brand and career.
