I can’t be overlooked when I’m on form

Former Ghana captain Asamoah Gyan is still eyeing a return to the Black Stars, saying he can’t be overlooked when he’s fit and on form.

The 35-year-old made only 5 league appearances for Legon Cities in the 2020/21 Ghana Premier League, a club he joined at the start of last season.

Gyan’s much-heralded return to the local league after 17 years was marred by fitness and injury issues that did not allow him to make the impact he was expected to bring on the pitch.

He last featured for the Ghana national team, the Black Stars at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt.

Gyan, who’s Africa’s top scorer in the history of the Fifa World Cup with 6 goals, concedes his Legon Cities move didn’t work out as planned.

The former Sunderland and Udinese forward has, however, added that he’s not considering retiring from football yet and will work to return to shape, and possibly play for the Black Stars again.

“I have not retired from football,” he said in an interview with Kessben FM. “There were some injuries last season, but I am not done playing football.

“I can wake up one day and announce my retirement from football, but at the moment, I am active.

“People will criticise me but I am only hoping to get back to my normal form and weight, but if I am not able to regain my form, then I will call it off. But at the moment, I am working on myself to lose my weight.

“I returned to Legon Cities and you could clearly see that things did not go as planned because I have put on weight, but I am giving myself another season and I trust I will be back to my form.

“And if I am on my form, I don’t think I will be overlooked [by the technical team of the Black Stars]. But for retirement, not now.”

Gyan is Ghana’s all-time top goalscorer with 51 goals in 109 games for the Black Stars of Ghana.

He was one of the Caf legends that conducted the group stage draw of the delayed 2021 Cameroon Afcon to be staged in early January 2022.
