Senior Technical Advisor to the Minister of Sports and Recreation, Hon. Betty Krosbi Mensah, has expressed confidence that the Black Queens can secure gold at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

Placed in Group D, Ghana will face Cape Verde, Mali, and Cameroon in the tournament. Originally scheduled to begin this month, WAFCON has been postponed due to hosting challenges, giving coach Kim Lars Bjrkegren and his squad additional time to prepare.

Speaking on Woezor TVs The Arena, the former Afram Plains North MP highlighted the teams steady progress and reiterated their ambition.

“We saw the performance of the team in Morocco last year, and since then, you can see the progression of the team,” Krosbi Mensah, who serves as the Chairperson for the Black Queens B, said.”The Black Queens played against England, and we all saw the performance despite the defeat. The aim for the team is to win gold at the WAFCON this and despite CAF pushing the tournament back, the aim remains unchanged,” she added.

The 2026 WAFCON is now scheduled for July 25 to August 16. The competition will also act as the main qualifying route for the 2027 FIFA Womens World Cup in Brazil, with the top four teams earning automatic qualification and two additional sides entering inter-confederation play-offs.
