Following the dismissal of Ghana Black Stars’ head coach, Otto Addo, gospel musician  Sonnie Badu has weighed in with strong opinions on the team’s leadership ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The ‘Baba’ hitmaker took to social media shortly after the announcement to comment on the state of the national team and the coaching transition, stating:

“After last night’s match, I gained some hope in Otto, but I think the senior national team was too big a responsibility for him. Maybe he’d be a better fit for one of the junior national teams. Now, the question is, who can take over in such a short time?”

In his post, the musician suggested that Kwasi Appiah, the former Ghana Black Stars head coach, would be the ideal choice to step in, citing Appiah’s familiarity with the players and his wealth of experience:

“I think AKWESI APPIAH would be the perfect choice. He knows all the players, has tons of experience, and can lead the team effectively. A foreign coach would need time, which we don’t have right now. We can’t risk having them lose and then say they didn’t have enough time with the players. Let’s get AKWESI APPIAH, even if it’s just for the World Cup.”

In the early hours of March 31, GFA announced Addo’s sacking after consecutive pre-tournament friendly defeats, including a 2‑1 loss to Germany and a 5‑1 defeat to Austria. The singer’s comments reflect growing public debate over the national team’s direction. Fans and pundits alike are questioning whether Addo, despite successfully leading Ghana through the qualification campaign, was ready to handle the pressures of the senior team on the world stage.

Ghana’s recent friendlies a 2‑1 loss to Germany and the 5‑1 defeat to Austria have intensified scrutiny of the squad’s preparation, with only a few months left before the tournament begins.

As the countdown to the World Cup continues, the Ghana Football Association has yet to announce a permanent replacement for the Black Stars’ head coach, while voices like Sonnie Badu’s amplify the conversation, reflecting the high expectations and passionate engagement of the national fan base.
