Ghanaian reggae musician and radio presenter, Blakk Rasta, has stirred a conversation about making Ghana’s Parliament more relatable to the public by advocating for the use of Pidgin English during parliamentary discussions. In an interview with Joy FM, Blakk Rasta argued that using Pidgin would bridge the communication gap between lawmakers and the general public, making parliamentary proceedings more accessible and engaging.
According to Blakk Rasta, the reliance on “big English” in Parliament often alienates many Ghanaians, leaving them unable to fully grasp the issues being debated. “I’m glad to hear people like A Plus and Baba Sadiq can speak Pidgin. I’ve heard them do it, and I want to see more of it in Parliament. The big English is too much,” he said.
He further emphasized the importance of breaking down complex issues to the level of the ordinary Ghanaian. “Radicalise the Parliament House. Bring it to the level of the people. Encourage them to be part of the discussions. Right now, when issues are being discussed in Parliament, it feels like bourgeoisies drinking tea. So we all wait for the news to break it down for us. I want to hear Pidgin in Parliament,” Blakk Rasta explained.
His comments have resonated with many Ghanaians who share his view that the current mode of communication in Parliament feels elitist and disconnected from the realities of the people. By calling for a shift to Pidgin English, Blakk Rasta hopes to inspire a more inclusive and participatory approach to Ghana’s legislative processes.
