Ghana Football Association (GFA) President Kurt Okraku has reaffirmed his determination to guide the Black Stars to an Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) triumph.
The West African giants, four-time African champions, last lifted the trophy in 1982. Since then, they have reached the AFCON finals in 1992, 2010, and 2015, finishing as runners-up on each occasion.
Under Okrakus tenure, which began in 2019, the Black Stars struggled in continental competitions, exiting at the group stage in both the 2021 and 2023 editions held in Cameroon and Ivory Coast.
Ghana also failed to qualify for the most recent AFCON in Morocco after a winless qualifying campaign.
Despite these setbacks, Okraku, speaking to Asaase Radio, insisted that winning the AFCON remains a top priority.
“I want to win the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), and that is the fact. Only God knows the number of times we have tried, and we have not been able to win the AFCON title.”Basically, I want to win every tournament for Ghana, and I want to place Ghana on the medal podium on any given occasion.”We have not won with the Black Stars, but for the U-20, they won the AFCON, and Black Queens won bronze at the WAFCON, and they are back again to compete at the WAFCON next month.”The Black Starlets, after a number of years, are back at the AFCON and the Black Princesses just qualified for the last round of the U-20 Women’s World Cup qualifiers, and hopefully they will be at the World Cup. They have been there two times under my leadership,” he added.Meanwhile, the Black Stars will compete at the 2026 World Cup, which will be co-hosted by the USA, Canada and Mexico this summer.
