Multiple award-winning Ghanaian highlife musician, George Kwabena Adu, popularly known as Kwabena Kwabena, has revealed that his breakthrough song ‘Aso’ was written while he was commuting in a public transport, commonly known as a trotro.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with Giovanni Caleb on TV3’s Showbiz 360, the singer disclosed that he penned the lyrics to the hit song during his days as a student at Accra Technical University, formerly known as Accra Polytechnic.
According to him, a significant portion of the songs on the album were written during his daily commute. He explained that after closing from school, he would often walk from campus to Circle before boarding a St. John’s bus to return home.
Kwabena Kwabena noted that those moments in the trotro became his creative space, revealing that about 70 to 80 percent of the album was written during those rides.
“Aso was written in a trotro. That album, I would say I wrote about 70 to 80 percent of the songs in a trotro. Around that time, I was at Accra Poly. I would close from school, and I would walk from the school campus to Circle before I got a St John’s bus to go home,” he said.
He further recounted how he would intentionally sit at the back of the bus, balancing his file on his lap as he wrote his songs. According to him, those journeys were often emotional and deeply personal, moments he believes were guided by divine inspiration.
The singer added that it was during those quiet and reflective moments that God blessed him with many of the songs that later defined his career.
Last year, Kwabena Kwabena marked the 20th anniversary of Aso, which was originally released in 2004 as part of his debut album. The album also featured timeless songs such as ‘Ka Kyere Me’ and ‘Trodom’. Aso played a pivotal role in establishing Kwabena Kwabena as one of Ghana’s most soulful and distinctive voices.
As part of the anniversary celebration, he released a remix of the song featuring Stonebwoy and Kofi Kinaata, a version that continues to gain traction among music lovers.
