The Minister-Designate for Tourism, Culture, and Creative Arts, Abla Dzifa Gomashie, has reaffirmed her commitment to revitalising Ghana’s tourism sector by focusing on improving the facilities at Mole National Park, one of Ghana’s most popular but underutilised tourist destinations.
Speaking during her vetting before Parliament’s Appointments Committee on Wednesday, Dzifa Gomashie underscored the need for strategic investments and collaborations to enhance the park’s appeal and increase annual visitation rates.
Mole National Park, located in the Savannah Region of Ghana, is renowned for its diverse wildlife, including elephants, antelopes, and baboons, as well as its breathtaking landscapes.
Despite its natural beauty and potential as a major tourist attraction, the park has historically faced challenges such as inadequate infrastructure, limited marketing, and lack of investment.
These issues have hindered its ability to attract both domestic and international visitors.
During the vetting session, Dzifa Gomashie acknowledged these challenges and outlined her vision for transforming the park into a premier destination.
When asked about her plans to improve visitation rates, she emphasised the importance of collaboration with key stakeholders, including Municipal and District Chief Executives (MCEs) in areas with tourist sites.
“I agree with you that Mole National Park for years is one of the least of sites that are usually visited [patronised] by visitors. What they probably need is more investments. It’s an area where our country needs to focus more on to give more to the sector.
“So that we can bring in required resources that we’re able to do. I will be championing the agenda for that and hope that the MCEs when approved will engage them.”
Dzifa Gomashie also noted that improving Mole National Park would not only boost tourism revenues but also create job opportunities for the local communities surrounding the park.
