Illegal sand winning activities at Bernganor village in the Ningo Prampram District of the Greater Accra Region are posing a serious threat to the ongoing Atlantic Beachfront Resorts and Residential Master-Planned City, commonly known as the Comet Marina.
The project, spearheaded by Seamless International Limited/Comet Properties Limited, is a significant addition to Ghana’s upscale real estate market, promising luxurious living spaces, world-class amenities, and a boost to the local economy.
However, the project’s future is at risk due to the rampant illegal sand mining occurring in the area.
The developers have issued an urgent appeal to the police, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources to investigate and clamp down on these illegal activities that are disrupting the project’s progress.
During a site visit by journalists on August 22, 2024, it became evident that unauthorized sand winning activities have been taking place under the cover of night.
These activities have caused significant environmental degradation, with land being excavated to depths of 10 to 20 feet, covering an estimated 21 acres.
The developers have formally reported the issue to the Tema Regional Police Command, which has since deployed officers to assess the damage.
The company expressed grave concerns over the environmental impact of the sand mining, warning that it could lead to severe erosion and long-term ecological damage.
They are also worried about the safety risks posed to the project site, which spans 400 acres and includes plans for sea-front hotels, apartments, restaurants, and a gated community with lagoons and rivers.
In response to the situation, Seamless International Limited/Comet Properties Limited has called for increased security measures in the area and urged the police and other regulatory bodies to take swift action against those responsible for the illegal activities.
The company emphasized its commitment to completing the project, which is expected to create hundreds of jobs and stimulate economic growth in the region.
The developers also appealed to the local community to support their efforts, stressing that the project will bring significant benefits to the area. With a low-density population target of 3,000 residents and discounted prices for early buyers, the Comet Marina promises to be a transformative development for the local real estate and tourism sectors.
Despite the challenges posed by illegal sand winning, the developers remain determined to see the project through, ensuring that it delivers both economic and environmental benefits to the region.
During the tour of the area, the team discovered that the illegal mining activity is still ongoing.
