A violent clash occurred at the inauguration of the Sokpoe Traditional Council in the South Tongu District of the Volta Region on Wednesday.

Some factions opposed to the Council inauguration attempted to disrupt the event, but Police swift action and arrests calmed the volatile situation.

The windshield of a salon car was smashed in the melee, while a few individuals could be seen oozing blood from the fight.

The area has two Paramount rulers installed, and the Ghana News Agency (GNA) gathered that the violence was as a result of an attempt to prevent the gazetted ruler, Togbui Kadzi Zogah II, from heading the Council.

Mr Harry Attipoe, Registrar of the Volta Region House of Chiefs, who is facilitating the inauguration of the Council, appealed for calm, saying the Council was not the possession of any individual ruler and should be endorsed.

He insisted on proceeding with the ceremony, and said the Council when established would facilitate the arbitration of chieftaincy disputes and help secure peace and development for the area.

The GNA gathered that several individuals were injured in a clash that occurred earlier at the venue and were taken to the hospital.

The Sokpoe Traditional Council was eventually inaugurated, and a total of 14 new traditional Councils are being inaugurated across the Volta Region, with a team from the Ministry of Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs overseeing the events.
