Nollywood actress Ini Edo has lost the ownership rights to the popular Netflix series “Shanty Town” to filmmaker Chinenye Nworah.

In January 2024, Ini Edo and Minini Empire Productions Limited (MEP) filed a double intellectual property petition against Chinenye Nworah and her production company, Giant Creative Media Limited (GCM), over the trademark rights to “Shanty Town.” The actress sought to claim ownership of the trademarks and copyrights associated with the series.

However, the Nigerian Copyright Commission (NCC) ruled in favor of Nworah, rejecting Ini Edo’s petition and upholding Nworah’s copyright certificates for both the literary and audiovisual works of “Shanty Town.”

Released in January 2023, “Shanty Town” is a six-part crime thriller and features a star-studded cast, including Chidi Mokeme, Richard Mofe-Damijo, Nse Ikpe-Etim, Sola Sobowale, Nancy Isime, and Ali Nuhu. The show became a hit on Netflix, and Nworah’s victory reinforces the importance of protecting creative works and ensuring fair compensation for artists.
