In the midst of the botched Sputnik V vaccine purchase and calls for the Minister of Health, Kwaku Agyemang Manu, to resign or be sacked, celebrated journalist Israel Laryea has called on protectors of the public purse to stand up and ensure that the public purse is not looted.
There are calls on President Nana Akufo-Addo to fire the Health Minister after an adhoc parliamentary committee confirmed that the minister breached several laws when he contracted an emirati Sheikh, Dalmook Al-Maktoum, to supply the country some 300, 000 doses of COVID-19 vaccines.
The Minister had said that no money had been paid to the Emirati Sheikh but subsequent revelations have confirmed that over sixteen million Ghana Cedis had been paid to the Sheikh who supplied only 20, 000 doses of the Sputnik V vaccine.
Even though the Sheikh has expressed his readiness to pay back the money paid to him for 280, 000 doses which he has been unable to supply, many have described the deal as shady given that a dose was bought for 19 dollars when the Russia Government, manufacturers of the vaccine sold it at 10 dollars.
