Itsir Kor Mpam an art exhibition and theatrical performance was held in honour of Nana Kobina Gyan, the Chief of Elmina who reigned from 1868 to 1873, and again from 1898 until his passing around 1901.

He was exiled by the British colonial authorities in 1873 to Sierra Leone, because of his anti-British stance. Nana Kobina Gyan is remembered as a courageous king who stood firm for what he believed was right for his people.

The artwork, which depicted him and his kinsmen seated in the town square, was created by Kafui Amediku, who was in residence at the Antique Lemonade Gallery during the process of bringing the piece to life.

The accompanying theatrical performance was written by Franka-Maria Andoh, Chair of the Antique Lemonade Arts Foundation, and directed by Rhoda Ampene.

The production featured Fred Amugi as Nana Kobina Gyan, Aloysius Acquah as the Okyeame, Nii Teiko Evans-Anfom as Governor Ferguson, Jay Garbrah as Mr. Brookman, Holden Ansah as Colonel Smith, and Evanda Amoh, Enoch Aggrey, Gideon Aboagye Dompreh, and Newton as the Elders. The scenic design was by Amb. Prince Kojo-Hilton.

The performance re-enacted a historic meeting between the British Governor, the Chief, and the Elders of Elmina, which took place in the Palaver Room of the Elmina Castle.

There were three shows that evening, and every guest left feeling part of history, as the story of this great king who always held his people close to heart was retold with passion.

The event was powered by the Antique Lemonade Arts Foundation in collaboration with Pristine Studios andsponsored by Josie’s Cuppa Cappuccino.

A key objective of the Antique Lemonade Arts Foundation is to preserve Ghanaian cultural heritage through its legacy platform, Ghananipa, which archives the stories of remarkable Ghanaians who have contributed meaningfully to family, community, and the nation.
