Marriage as an institution comes with its own challenges, misunderstandings and seasons of growth. While many people focus on the difficulties, others believe the experience can become fulfilling when couples are intentional and committed.
For Ghanaian gospel musician Mavis Asante, her 15-year journey proves that although marriage is not always easy, it is still worthwhile.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with Doreen Avio and Kwame Dadzie on Hitz FM, the singer opened up about her personal experience while encouraging single women not to be discouraged by negative narratives surrounding marriage.
According to Mavis Asante, the early years of her marriage were emotionally demanding. She admitted that there were moments of tears and challenges, just like many couples experience. However, she noted that those difficult seasons did not define the entire journey.
“It hasn’t been easy, especially in the initial stages. It’s very tough. I’ve cried. I’ve had my fair share of all the ugly sides of marriage. I’ve been through everything any other woman will go through in marriage,” she shared.
She revealed that a lesson from a book she once read helped shape her mindset during tough times. The book emphasized that marriage gets better with time — a belief she held onto whenever things felt overwhelming.
Despite the hurdles, the ‘Aseda’ hitmaker was clear that certain boundaries have never been crossed in her home. She disclosed that her husband has never raised his hand against her, adding that whenever she expresses discomfort about an issue, he makes a conscious effort to change.
Over the years, she said, patience, understanding and deliberate effort from both partners have strengthened their relationship. She stressed that just like careers and businesses require energy and dedication, marriage demands the same level of commitment.
Transparency, she added, has also been central to their marriage. At some point, the couple decided not to keep secrets from each other — a decision she believes has deepened their bond. She even revealed that she knows her husband’s mobile money (MoMo) PIN, though both of them respect the trust that comes with such openness.
Reaffirming her belief in the institution, Mavis Asante maintained that marriage is good and should not be viewed as a burden by single ladies.
“Marriage is good. Don’t let anyone deceive you by telling you that marriage is bad or that when you marry your whole life has ended. Marriage is good,” she said.
For the gospel musician, her experience shows that while marriage may begin with challenges, consistent effort and mutual understanding can make it better with time.
