In a historic turn of events in the 2024 general elections, actor-turned-politician John Dumelo has been declared the winner for the Ayawaso West constituency, defeating his opponent from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in a closely contested race.
Dumelo, who was running under the banner of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), secured a significant victory after a fierce campaign that captivated both young and old voters alike. His win marks a major achievement in his political career, after his first attempt in 2020, when he narrowly lost to the NPP’s Mrs. Lydia Alhassan.
This time, however, Dumelo’s strong message of social change, job creation, and empowerment for youth and women resonated with the electorate. He campaigned heavily on promises to improve local infrastructure, enhance education, and create more opportunities for young people in the constituency.
In the final results, John Dumelo garnered 47,560 votes, defeating Mrs. Lydia Alhassan, who secured 39,214 votes, a margin that demonstrates growing support for Dumelo’s vision for the constituency.
After the announcement of the results, Dumelo expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the voters and pledged to work tirelessly to deliver on his campaign promises. “This victory is not just for me, but for the people of Ayawaso West. I am committed to ensuring that we build a stronger, more prosperous community together,” Dumelo said.
His win is seen as a major political shift in Ayawaso West, which has long been considered a stronghold for the NPP. The result also reflects broader trends in the 2024 elections, where several high-profile seats have been contested vigorously by new political faces.
