Nigerian singer Timaya recently ignited controversy with his views on marriage and having children out of wedlock.

In a viral video featuring him and Paul Okoye (Rudeboy), they were seen discussing marital advice for their colleague Phyno. Timaya boldly stated, “Just born pikin, pikin go grow. This marriage thing no dey work,” suggesting that he believes marriage often fails to provide stability and happiness.

This statement sparked a wave of reactions on social media, with many users expressing their disagreement with his perspective. Timaya, who has four children with three different women, seems to draw from personal experience, often prioritizing fatherhood over traditional marriage. His daughters Emmanuella and Gracey are with Barbara Fumnaya Nwaokolo, while his son Emmanuel is with Tamar, and his youngest child, Maya, is with Dunnie Onasanya.

In a 2024 interview with Naija FM, Timaya opened up about his current status as an unmarried man in his 40s, acknowledging that he hasn’t felt a compelling desire to get married. Despite his firm stance on the institution of marriage, he did leave room for the possibility that his views may evolve in the future.
