A father and his partner have been taken into custody by the Kokrobite District Police Command following the death of a 13 year old girl identified as Celestine in the Ga South Municipality of the Greater Accra Region. The arrests occurred after residents alerted authorities to the incident.
According to eyewitness accounts shared with United Television and Adom News, Issah Mohammed allegedly assaulted his daughter after his partner, Yaa Grace, reported that the child had eaten leftover food meant for her younger brother. The incident took place after Mohammed returned from work.
Witnesses told reporters that Mohammed used multiple implements including a cane, shovel, and cutlass during the assault, which resulted in severe internal injuries. The child was subsequently locked in a separate room without access to food or water, where she died the following day.
Community members who observed the situation reported that Celestine’s body remained outside under a mango tree overnight before being moved inside the house. Concerned residents then contacted police, leading to the arrests. Grace was apprehended first at the residence, while Mohammed was taken into custody later.
The victim’s stepmother is not her biological mother. Information gathered indicates that Mohammed had previously divorced Celestine’s biological mother due to what sources described as repeated abuse. He later entered into a relationship with Grace.
The Kokrobite District Police Command has launched an investigation into the matter. Celestine’s body has been transferred to the Police Hospital for an autopsy examination. Both suspects remain in police custody and are assisting with ongoing inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the child’s death.
The incident has sent shockwaves through the Kokrobite community, where residents expressed distress over the tragic loss of the young girl’s life.
