The Ghana Education Service (GES) has imposed a two-year ban on three senior high schools in the Eastern Region following serious incidents that occurred during a recent inter-school sports competition in Koforidua.
The affected schools are Koforidua Senior High Technical School (SHTS), New Juaben Senior High School (SHS), and New Nsutam Senior High Technical School (SHTS).
Under the directive, the schools are prohibited from organising, participating in, or attending any sporting or co-curricular activities. The ban covers events such as quizzes, debates, cadet programmes, and entertainment activities.
In addition to the suspension, each school has been fined GHC 500. They will also bear any financial costs related to property damage or injuries recorded during the incidents.
The sanctions were announced in a statement issued by the Eastern Regional Director of Education, Madam Ivy Asantewa Owusu. The decision follows alleged cases of gang rape and a stabbing that reportedly occurred during the inter-school sports event held in the regional capital.
According to the statement, the disciplinary action is in line with provisions in the GES Code of Conduct, particularly Section 2.17, which addresses physical and psychological violence. The decision was also guided by the Eastern Region Schools and Colleges Sports Association’s Code of Discipline.

Authorities indicated that investigations found students from the affected schools to have engaged in acts described as hooliganism and disorderly behaviour, which violate GES standards on discipline and student conduct.
Meanwhile, police have arrested two underage students in connection with the alleged gang rape of a student during the sports event. The suspects are currently facing prosecution on charges of conspiracy to commit rape and rape.
A third suspect, believed to be a former student, is reportedly on the run.
In a separate development, another student has also been arrested for allegedly stabbing a fellow student at a location some distance from the sports venue.
The incidents have raised concerns about student discipline and safety during inter-school activities in the region.
