Victoria Bright.

Governance expert Victoria Bright has condemned suspended Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo’s public commentary on her impeachment proceedings as a violation of constitutional protocol.

Speaking on JoyNews’ Newsfile, Bright emphasized Article 146 of Ghana’s 1992 Constitution mandates such proceedings be held in camera, not through media engagements.

“I wish she respected constitutional procedures requiring privacy during impeachment,” stated Bright. “The panel comprises eminent individuals capable of impartial evaluation—we shouldn’t hear one side publicly.” Her critique follows Torkornoo’s unprecedented press conference criticizing the petition against her.

Bright questioned the appropriateness of the Chief Justice bypassing established authorities: “This matter rests with the President and Council of State—not subject to personal interpretation. You can’t make your own rules.” The remarks reinforce earlier criticisms by lawyers including Musa Ahmed, who warned such actions erode judicial integrity amid ongoing proceedings.
