Renowned music producer and entertainment personality Fred Kyei Mensah has revealed the real-life inspiration behind one of Daddy Lumba’s most beloved songs, “Theresa Abebrese.”

Speaking during an interview on The Chat with Ekow Koomson on Channel One TV on Saturday July 27, he recounted that the song was drawn from a deeply personal story from Daddy Lumba’s youth.

According to Mensah, Theresa Abebrese was not just a name in a song, she was Daddy Lumba’s real-life classmate back in school.

“At the time, Theresa was one of the few students who had relatives abroad,” he explained. “So when she received packages from outside, she would often share them with Lumba, who deeply appreciated her kindness.”

As the story goes, Daddy Lumba eventually developed feelings for her, but when he was ready to pursue a serious relationship or marriage, someone else entered the picture.

That heartbreak and emotional moment, Fred said, inspired the heartfelt lyrics and melody that became “Theresa Abebrese.”

“His lyrics speak real experiences,” Fred emphasised. “That’s what made Lumba’s music so relatable  it came from a genuine place.”

The revelation offers a poignant glimpse into the emotional depth behind Lumba’s songwriting and further cements his legacy as a storyteller whose music was deeply rooted in lived experience.

As tributes continue to pour in following his passing on July 26, 2025, stories like these remind fans why Daddy Lumba’s music remains timeless — because it was true.
