With just hours to go before Ghana’s highly anticipated December 7 elections, former President and flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has leveled serious allegations against the Electoral Commission (EC).According to Mahama, the EC is actively working to aid the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) in manipulating the electoral process, a move he firmly believes will ultimately fail.
In a Facebook post on December 6, 2024, Mahama stated, “Since Thursday night, the National Democratic Congress has reported several cases of exposed validating stamps to the Commission, yet they have refused to issue a clear and unambiguous directive to stop their staff from disclosing the identities and details of the validating stamps ahead of tomorrow’s general elections.” He warned that such exposure could lead to electoral fraud, explaining that “such an exposure allows the party that has printed fake ballot papers to produce similar stamps to use in order to achieve a semblance of validity.”
Mahama further alleged that an internal memo from the EC, dated October 10, 2024, revealed a calculated plot to expose the serial numbers of the validating stamps before voting day to facilitate ballot stuffing. He urged the National Peace Council, religious and traditional leaders, civil society organizations, the international community, and election observers to intervene and hold the EC accountable.
Despite the serious accusations, Mahama expressed unwavering faith in the people of Ghana. He emphasized that the NDC and its supporters are committed to ensuring the integrity of the electoral process, stating, “We will resist any attempts to manipulate the outcome.” Mahama’s call for action adds to the already tense political climate in Ghana, with the coming hours critical for both the nation’s democratic stability and the credibility of the election.
