Chief of Staff Julius Debrah has revealed that President John Dramani Mahama was an ardent admirer of the late highlife legend Charles Kojo Fosu, popularly known as Daddy Lumba, describing the bond between the President and the musician as “special and heartfelt.”
Speaking during a courtesy call by Daddy Lumba’s family on Monday, August 25, Mr. Debrah shared personal reflections and conveyed government condolences following the official announcement of the singer’s passing.
“The President loved Daddy Lumba’s songs. When he sits in his car and sings along, you’d be amazed — so this is a great loss to us all,” he said. “I can’t sing like that, so you can see there was a special connection.”
Mr. Debrah noted that Daddy Lumba’s music transcended generations and personal moments, resonating deeply with Ghanaians from all walks of life.
“His songs touched all of us — whether we were sad or happy, Daddy Lumba made a lasting impact,” he added.
He emphasised that the musician’s contributions to Ghana’s cultural heritage would not go unrecognised.
“We can’t say we won’t honour him, especially considering how well he honoured Ghana with his music. As a government, we will support the family in this difficult time.”
Reflecting on the irreplaceable nature of the music icon, Mr. Debrah further remarked:
“If money could save a life, we would have found a way. This is not just a loss for the family, but for the entire nation.”
The family’s visit to Jubilee House formed part of traditional protocols to officially notify government of the death of a distinguished national figure. Discussions are expected to continue regarding funeral arrangements and the possibility of state involvement in honouring the late musician.
Daddy Lumba reportedly passed away in July at The Bank Hospital in Cantonments, Accra. His death has left a significant void in Ghana’s music industry and sparked nationwide mourning.
Born on September 29, 1964, Lumba rose to fame in the 1980s and went on to become a pillar of the highlife genre. He released more than 30 albums during a prolific career that produced timeless hits such as Aben Wo Ha, Theresa, Yentie Obiaa, and Playboy. His distinctive style, powerful vocals, and emotionally resonant lyrics secured him a permanent place in the hearts of Ghanaians and music lovers worldwide.
From his beginnings with Nana Acheampong as part of the Lumba Brothers to his remarkable solo career, Daddy Lumba inspired generations of artists and fans, becoming a cultural icon whose legacy will endure for decades to come.
