A man believed to be in his late twenties, identified as Wisdom Tetteh Assem, has allegedly been stabbed to death during a Valentine’s Day celebration at Adokorpe in the Ada East District of the Greater Accra Region.

The incident occurred in a compound adjacent to Kassar Bar, where a Valentine’s Day programme was underway on the night of Saturday, February 14.

Mr Gilbert Botwe, General Manager of Kassar Bar, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that he was informed by staff that the suspect—reportedly a worker at a nearby block factory—confronted the deceased for allegedly attempting to urinate within the factory premises and seized his mobile phone.

He said the confrontation escalated into a heated argument and exchange of blows after the deceased managed to retrieve his phone.

Eyewitnesses told the GNA that the suspect, identified only as “Eric Kartel,” then went into his room located within the block factory compound, picked up a pair of scissors, and returned minutes later to stab the deceased multiple times.

They added that the deceased had earlier been persuaded by a friend of the suspect to return to the scene to amicably settle the misunderstanding.

The victim reportedly died on the spot, while the suspect fled and is currently at large.

ACP Joseph Atsu Djineku, Ada Divisional Commander of the Ghana Police Service, said the police received a distress call and arrived at the scene at about 0330 hours on Sunday, but the victim had already been taken to a health facility.

He said the police retrieved a pair of scissors from the scene but could not immediately confirm whether it was the weapon used, as forensic investigations are underway.

ACP Djineku said a friend of the suspect had been arrested to assist with investigations and assured the public that the police would pursue the matter thoroughly to ensure justice is served.

He also cautioned the public against resorting to violence in resolving disputes.

Meanwhile, family members of the deceased have expressed shock and called on the owner of the block factory to assist the police in locating the suspect.

Mr David Kofi Assem, an uncle of the deceased, described him as hardworking and respectful, noting that he had completed his carpentry apprenticeship just two months ago.

“He was not a troublesome person. He never fought anyone. We are pleading with the police and the authorities to ensure justice is served,” he said.
