Vice Chair of Parliament’s Subsidiary Legislation Committee, Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah
Manhyia South Member of Parliament Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah has been granted GH¢10 million bail with two sureties after pleading not guilty to three charges brought against him by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).
The bail was granted after prosecutors, led by Deputy Attorney-General Justice Srem-Sai, presented the charges against the legislator before the court.
The two sureties are the Member of Parliament for Bosome Freho and the Member of Parliament for Effia.
Baffour Awuah pleaded not guilty to charges including conspiracy to commit a crime and dissipation of public funds, as well as intentionally causing financial loss to the state.
He also denied a money laundering charge relating to an alleged GH¢1 million transfer to the then Managing Director of SIC Life in 2024.
The prosecution team includes Senior State Attorney Nana Ama Prempeh and EOCO officers Leo Anthony Asiamah, Emmanuel Dzakata and Rabiatu Abdulai, who are expected to assist with the state’s case.
The charges form part of an EOCO investigation into alleged financial transactions involving SIC Life Savings and Loans.
Baffour Awuah’s lawyer, Samuel Atta Akyea, has previously rejected the allegations and maintained that his client’s involvement in the matter arose from legitimate legal work undertaken for SIC Life.
The latest proceedings follow the MP’s surrender to EOCO on October 1 after an Accra High Court issued a warrant for his arrest.
EOCO subsequently confirmed that Baffour Awuah had surrendered and was cooperating with investigators.
The case will now proceed through the court process, with the prosecution expected to present evidence in support of the charges.
