Michael B. Jordan made history at this year’s Academy Awards, winning Best Actor for his role as twins Smoke and Stack in the 2025 hit film Sinners.
In a heartfelt acceptance speech, he revealed that his father had traveled all the way from Ghana to witness the milestone. “Man, God is good,” Jordan said, expressing his gratitude for his family’s support and the opportunity to achieve this career-defining moment.

The actor paid tribute to director Ryan Coogler and to past Black Oscar winners, including Sidney Poitier, Denzel Washington, Halle Berry, and Will Smith, acknowledging the trailblazers who paved the way for him. He also thanked fans for their support: “I want to say ‘thank you’… to everybody at home who went to see the movie once, twice, three, four times. You made this movie what it is. I love you.” Jordan, just the sixth Black man in history to win Best Actor, had previously been overlooked for his roles in Fruitvale Station, Black Panther, and Creed, making this win a long-awaited triumph.
The Oscar winner has long expressed admiration for Ghana. In a 2024 interview on The Culture Joint podcast, Jordan said: “A place that I’ve been longing to visit is Ghana. I’ve been trying to spend some time there but every time I am planning to go, something I can’t change will just pop. I’ve heard incredible things about Ghana and its deep-rooted history and lively culture. The welcoming atmosphere is something I’ve always wanted to experience.”
