The Mortuary Workers Association of Ghana (MOWAG) is embarking on an indefinite strike effective today, Thursday, September 26, in demand of improved conditions of service.

Concerns of the union include inadequate provision of personal protective equipment (PPE), which the members of the union say has exposed them to diseases and other dangers.

Additionally, salary arrears of members dating back to 2020 remain unpaid, and the request for financial clearance to employ 500 additional mortuary workers has been ignored

General Secretary of MOWAG, Richard Kofi Jordan tells Citi News, that the members of the union will not return to work until their demands are met.

“We are going to strike and as I speak to you members have started putting red bands around their gate. I mean, nothing has come to our attention that will change our plans. It is not about coming to have a discussion anymore. We have had a series of discussions on these particular matters before our employer.

“This is about implementation. We are only asking for things that will not even have any impact on the economy. We don’t see anything concrete changing our minds apart from the full implementation of our demands.

“Our strike is supposed to be definite and we do not have a timeline for us to whether we will stop here until we see results.”
