Mr Emmanuel Kwaku Boam, the Member of Parliament for Pru East in the Bono East Region has assured expeditious investigations into the accident which happened on the Volta Lake leaving nine people dead.
He expressed his condolences to the bereaved families, promising that thorough investigations would be conducted to determine the actual cause of the disaster.
Speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in an interview at Yeji, Mr Boam explained that preliminary investigations showed that the incident happened when the passenger boat traveling on the lake from Yeji to Makango was caught in a severe storm and capsized in the process.
The incident reportedly happened in the early hours of Thursday, April 9, 2026, between Sikape and Matayoko fishing communities in the district.
Mr Boam assured that: “We will engage the appropriate authorities to ensure a thorough investigation of the circumstances surrounding the incident”.
The Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Gabriel Kofi Alorsey, the Salaga District Police Commander in the Savannah region who confirmed the deaths, told the GNA that 15 occupants including children were in the boat.
He said five of them were rescued and stressed the need to strengthen safety measures on the lake to prevent future mishaps.
DSP Alorsey advised the boat operators and travelers on the lake to endeavour to comply with safety protocols, ensuring that they wore life jackets and avoid traveling during unfavourable weather conditions.
