Akim Swedru MP Kennedy Nyarko Osei has condemned the government’s decision to repurpose the National Cathedral project into a National Cultural Convention Centre (NCCC), describing it as an affront to Ghana’s faith community.
In a social media statement, the opposition lawmaker questioned the administration’s commitment to religious identity, urging Christians to oppose the move: “Don’t just sit unconcerned… Where lies your faithfulness to the creator?”
The criticism targets the government’s SH0W24 creative economy policy, which partners with the AfCFTA Secretariat to transform the stalled cathedral site into a hub for cultural diplomacy and events. While officials position the shift as pragmatic economic revitalization, detractors—including religious leaders—view it as abandoning the project’s original spiritual vision.
The cathedral project, launched in 2018 as a non-denominational Christian monument, faced prior controversy over costs and public funding. The NCCC redesign aims to resolve the impasse but has intensified debate over national promises versus economic pragmatism.
