MTN Ghana has donated computers and accessories to the Office of the Minister of State for Climate Change and Sustainability to enhance operational capacity of the newly established ministry.
This gesture follows an earlier engagement between the telecommunications company and the ministry, during which the ministry’s operational needs were brought to the company’s attention.
Speaking during the presentation, Chief Corporate Services and Sustainability Officer-MTN Ghana Adwoa Wiafe said the company acted swiftly in response to the ministry’s request for essential tools, including computers, projectors and presentation screens.
“When the ministry was being set up, we engaged to understand its immediate needs. Today’s donation directly responds to those priorities and supports the vital national work underway,” she stated.
Ms. Wiafe also established the company’s recent sustainability initiatives including introducing electric vehicles and biodegradable SIMs within its operations, which seeks to reduce environmental impact. She also referenced the company’s Sustainability Week, which coincided with global climate discussions and commended the ministry for its participation and support.
Receiving the donation, Minister for Climate Change and Sustainability Issifu Seidu expressed gratitude and described the gesture as a demonstration of corporate leadership.
He disclosed that the ministry dedicated its first few months to setting up its institutional structures, including the creation of a Technical Working Committee comprising representatives from different ministries. The committee convenes monthly to harmonise sectoral climate efforts and build a cohesive national climate action platform.
Mr. Seidu used the occasion to formally invite MTN Ghana to nominate a representative to join the Technical Working Committee, emphasising the importance of private sector participation in shaping national climate policy.
“We cannot tackle climate change in isolation. It affects every sector of the economy. Collaboration with the private sector is crucial to ensuring policy coherence, monitoring and evaluation and building a strong national conversation around climate action,” he stated.
The minister further outlined plans to establish climate and sustainability units across ministries, promote climate-focused engagement at the district assembly level through a bottom-up approach and create a Climate and Sustainability Hub to serve as a national centre of excellence for research, coordination and capacity building.
He also revealed plans of organising a National Climate Business Forum to deepen private sector involvement in adaptation and sustainability initiatives.
He assured MTN Ghana that the donated equipment will be fully deployed to strengthen the ministry’s work – while expressing confidence that the company’s leadership will inspire broader corporate participation in the country’s climate and sustainability drive.
