Angel Carbonu, President of the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), has revealed that Organized Labour has presented the President of the Republic, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, with three key conditions to consider suspending the planned strike on October 10, 2024, in a bid to avert a potential crisis.
In a statement shared on Onua FM following a meeting between the President and Organized Labour earlier today, October 4, 2024, Carbonu noted that the President expressed serious concerns about the potential adverse effects of the strike on the nation.
“The President met with the leadership of Organized Labour to discuss the pressing issues. He urged us to reconsider the strike, highlighting that its implementation would significantly impact the country,” Carbonu explained.
Despite the President’s pleas, Organized Labour maintained its stance, stating that suspending the strike was not feasible under the current circumstances.
Carbonu outlined the three conditions put forth by Organized Labour, which include withdrawing a controversial law allowing mining in forest reserves, declaring a state of emergency in mining areas and water bodies, and making it a criminal offense for individuals to engage in such activities.
Additionally, Organized Labour has called for a temporary ban on mining operations until the situation is resolved, after which a regulatory framework could be established.
As tensions rise, the effectiveness of the ongoing dialogue between the government and Organized Labour is of utmost importance in addressing the issues surrounding the upcoming strike.
