Representatives from News Ghana, a popular Ghanaian online media portal, and others from around the world who participated in the 6th World Media Summit (WMS), which ended last week in China, have commended the Xinhua News Agency and its partners for a well-organized program.
According to the participants, the theme, “Artificial Intelligence and Media Transformation,” selected by the organizers was apt and timely looking at the circumstances in which the media finds itself today.
They also said the sharing of experiences by participants from diverse backgrounds will help to boost people-to-people cooperation as well as help media practitioners to carry out their activities in an efficient manner.
Francis Kobena Tandoh, sub-editor with News Ghana, observed that the summit was an eye opener as it delved deep into one of the pressing issues confronting the media.
“We live in an era where the media is surrounded by lots of information, with some being fake or misleading. I think organizing this summit with the theme AI and media transformation was quite appropriate, as it helped us identify the real opportunities and challenges regarding our work,” said Tandoh.
I will like to thank Xinhua News Agency and the government of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region for co-hosting the summit and providing all the comfort and courtesies to everyone of us. I wish to say the partnership between Xinhua News Agency and News Ghana has gone to another level,” he added.
The General Director for La Nation, the national news daily for Benin, Codjo Houelete Paul AMOUSSOU, stressed the significance of the summit and congratulated the organizers for putting together such a program.
“AI is very important for the media, and this summit provides an excellent opportunity to learn more about it. It is a good opportunity to share experiences to know the various AI tools used by other media houses globally so we can learn from each other.I congratulate the organizers for putting together this important summit to discuss the opportunities and challenges of AI for the work of the media,” said Amoussou.
Rosaria Lubumbashi Simengwa, Editor-in-Chief, Zambia News and Information Services (ZANIS), expressed her delight for such an opportunity to participate in the global media summit.
She said, “I am attending the World Media Summit for the first time, and I must say that it was an honor to interact with different news organizations of the world, which I used to hear or listen to them through radio, TV, print/newspapers, and online publications.”
“The theme “AI and Media Transformation” is appropriate. It is very important we are reminded as journalists that the basics of news reporting form the foundation of the industry and therefore cannot be done away with or ignored because of the technology we are using to improve our communication,” Simengwa further stated.
Director of Training Center for the Jordan News Agency, Jamil Ghadaireh, emphasized that the most dangerous thing facing the media in recent times is fake news and stressed the importance of the summit in identifying common solutions to enhance the work of journalists.
“The most dangerous thing facing the media today is fake news. Today, we are facing a golden opportunity to benefit from artificial intelligence in the news process. The summit is considered an important platform for identifying the most prominent challenges facing global media and searching for common solutions to confront these challenges,” said Ghadaireh.
“The summit is considered an important platform for global leaders to exchange opinion and experiences on the best ways to benefit from generative artificial intelligence in order to improve media and journalistic work to serve humanity better,” added the Director of Training for the Jordan News Agency.
The 6th World Media Summit, co-hosted by Xinhua News Agency and the government of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, held between October 12 and 17 in Urumqi, China, brought together over 500 delegates from 106 countries and regions, including representatives of 208 mainstream media outlets, government organs, UN agencies, and international organizations for in-depth exchanges on “AI and Media Transformation.”
Since its inception in 2009, the World Media Summit has remained committed to advancing the collective development of media worldwide and has embraced the principles of “cooperation, action, mutual benefit, and development.” It has become an influential platform for global media to discuss and share together.
