Accra’s once-thriving cinema scene could soon see a revival, as the National Film Authority (NFA) begins a fresh push to reclaim and modernize some of the capital’s abandoned movie houses.
In a recent inspection tour, NFA leadership, headed by Executive Secretary, Kafui Danku-Pitcher and Deputy Executive Secretary, James Gardiner, visited a number of defunct cinema facilities that were once central to urban entertainment life.
Among the locations assessed were the iconic Roxy Cinema, Rex Cinema, and Orion Cinema. These venues, now largely inactive, previously served as social and cultural hotspots for film lovers across the city.
The exercise, according to the Authority, was not merely observational. It focused on evaluating the physical condition of the structures and exploring realistic options for redevelopment. The goal is to transform these aging spaces into modern cinema hubs equipped to meet current entertainment standards.
Beyond restoration, the NFA is positioning the initiative as a catalyst for economic and creative growth. By revamping these facilities, the Authority hopes to strengthen Ghana’s film industry, expand audience engagement, and create new revenue opportunities within the sector.
A key part of the plan involves collaboration. The NFA is actively encouraging private investors and stakeholders in the creative industry to partner in the redevelopment process, emphasizing that long-term success will depend on sustainable, well-structured investments.
If successful, the project could mark a turning point, reconnecting Ghanaian audiences with the big-screen experience while preserving an important piece of the country’s cultural heritage.
