The debate surrounding the Black Stars’ goalkeeping department has intensified after sports pundit Christopher Nimley questioned the readiness of locally based shot-stopper Benjamin Asare and called for a European-based alternative ahead of upcoming major tournaments.

Speaking on Jupay Podcast Live, Nimley argued that strong performances in the Ghana Premier League are not enough to guarantee success at international level. Although Asare has earned plaudits domestically, Nimley insisted the quality of attacking play in the local competition does not adequately test goalkeepers.

“Benjamin Asare is not the best goalkeeper for the team. The quality of finishing in our local league is not a good enough test,” he said, adding that the demands of tournaments such as the FIFA World Cup and the Africa Cup of Nations require greater exposure.

Nimley urged the Ghana Football Association to explore options in Europe, identifying AZ Alkmaar goalkeeper Rome-Jayden Owusu-Oduro as a suitable candidate due to his experience in the Dutch Eredivisie and reported willingness to represent Ghana.

He also criticized current first-choice Lawrence Ati-Zigi, citing concerns over consistency at both club and international level.

With scrutiny mounting, attention now turns to whether head coach Otto Addo will reassess his goalkeeping options or maintain faith in the current pool.
