The chiefs and people of Nkroful have accepted an apology from Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the running mate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), following his controversial remarks about Ghana’s first president, Dr Kwame Nkrumah.
Dr Opoku Prempeh, known as NAPO, faced severe backlash and public outrage after claiming President Nana Akufo-Addo had achieved more than Nkrumah during his unveiling in Kumasi on July 9.
The comparison drew widespread criticism, with some questioning its relevance and manner.
In response to the controversy, Dr. Opoku Prempeh issued a public apology.
However, the chiefs of Nkroful, Nkrumah’s hometown, requested a personal apology before considering whether the matter was resolved.
During a recent visit to Nzemaland, Dr Opoku Prempeh stopped in Nkroful to address the issue.
He expressed regret, stating, “I grew up among the Nzema people and consider them my own. I would never intentionally disrespect Nkrumah.
If I was misunderstood, I apologize. I stand before you to ask for your forgiveness, as we are all people.”
Nana Kwasi Kutua, the chief of Nkroful, graciously accepted the apology on behalf of the community, marking a significant step towards resolution.
He acknowledged the widespread condemnation of Dr. Opoku Prempeh’s comments and underscored the significance of recognizing Nkrumah’s monumental contributions to the nation.
“We appreciate the apology and the efforts to address the matter directly with us.
We are a peaceful people and wish to avoid any discord. We accept Dr. Opoku Prempeh’s apology as he has come to us personally, reaffirming his regret,” Nana Kutua reiterated, emphasizing the community’s commitment to peace.
