Ghana’s opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has accused the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) of politicizing last week’s military helicopter tragedy.
National Organiser Henry Nana Boakye denounced the arrest of two individuals a Wontumi TV journalist and an NPP activist as “political harassment” during national mourning.
Speaking on the Asaase Breakfast Show Wednesday, Nana B described the journalist’s arrest as particularly alarming, alleging the reporter was reportedly seized by masked, armed personnel who fired warning shots. “We should be united behind President Mahama, honoring our fallen soldiers,” he stated. “Instead, state agencies are dragging this grief into partisan conflict.”
He claimed government critics face targeted suppression while inflammatory remarks by NDC supporters go unchecked. Nana B referenced past incidents where NPP leaders allegedly received death wishes from ruling party affiliates without consequence. While stressing he doesn’t endorse reckless speech, he criticized the arrests’ timing and methods: “Even military regimes presented warrants. Are we back to that era?”
Nana B urged security agencies to act with civility, suggesting discreet invitations rather than public detentions. “Deepening divisions when families mourn soldiers is unacceptable,” he concluded, calling for national unity.
