A member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) legal team, Enoch Afoakwah, has called for the introduction of clear case classification guidelines to govern the operations of the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP), to enable the public to understand the threshold of matters the office is mandated to investigate and prosecute.

Speaking on GBC’s News Analysis programme, Current Agenda, Lawyer Afoakwah said the OSP has become a target of political attacks because it is the only anti-corruption agency that operates without direct political control.

He stated that he was not surprised by the Majority Leader’s recent actions against the OSP, recalling that the first Special Prosecutor had previously investigated the Majority Leader over the procurement of vehicles.

Despite his defence of the institution, Lawyer Afoakwah acknowledged that he has concerns about the conduct of the OSP, citing alleged human rights violations, including the recent arrest of private legal practitioner Martin Kpebu.

He stressed, however, that Ghanaians must resist attempts to subject the Office of the Special Prosecutor to political influence, describing it as the country’s only truly independent anti-corruption institution that must be protected to effectively carry out its mandate.
