Nana Akomea, Vice Chairman of the Dr. Bawumia 2024 Campaign team, has revealed that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has anticipated John Dramani Mahama’s victory months before the December 2024 elections.

Speaking on Good Morning Ghana on Metro TV, Akomea explained that internal research conducted by the NPP in February 2024 showed that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, John Mahama, was leading by ten percentage points.

“In February and March, the NDC was leading by about 10 percentage points, which was quite concerning,” Akomea said. He noted, however, that by September and October, the gap had narrowed to just two points. “We were very confident. It was a new momentum, but we knew there was a lot of apathy and disgruntlement among our supporters,” he added.

Despite the narrowing gap, the election results reflected the earlier projections. On December 9, 2024, the Electoral Commission Chairperson, Jean Mensa, declared John Mahama the winner with 6,328,397 votes, representing 56.55% of the total vote. Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia came second with 4,657,304 votes, or 41.61%.

Akomea also raised concerns about voter turnout. He called for investigations into why about two million voters stayed away from the polls, describing the low turnout as “massive.”

The NPP plans to analyze these factors to understand the electorate’s mood and find out what led to their loss.
