The Centre for National Culture, Ashanti Region, was abuzz with excitement on Tuesday as the annual Otumfuo Osei Tutu II Art and Craft Exhibition opening ceremony took place. The event, which featured a diverse range of art pieces and crafts, was attended by art enthusiasts, students, collectors, tourists, dignitaries, and members of the public.
The exhibition, which runs until August 16, 2024, showcases the works of over 50 local artists and artisans, highlighting the rich cultural heritage of the Ashanti Region and Ghana in general. The displays include traditional crafts, textiles, paintings, sculptures, and more.
This year’s exhibition is under the theme ‘Promoting Trade, Tourism and Investments in Ashanti Region: The Role of Asantehene’s 25th Anniversary Celebration’. The 6-week long exhibition is curated by the Cultural Centre to celebrate and honour the Overlord of the Asante Kingdom, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, who just celebrated his 25th anniversary since his occupancy on the Gold Stool.
In his opening address, Nana Adda Gyamera, the Chief of Feyiase Akoyem Traditional in the Ashanti Region, praised the artists and exhibitors for their dedication and passion, saying, “art and culture has the power to bring people together and inspire us to see the world from different perspectives. This exhibition is a testament to the creativity and talent that exists in our community.”
He added “it is also an undeniable fact that Asantehene’s unparalleled wisdom and vision have created a conducive environment for creative and tourism businesses to thrive and attract investments for Asanteman in particular, and Ghana in general.”
The handicraft products also highlight the diversity and talent of the participating artists. The displays range from traditional to contemporary, offering something for everyone.
In his address, the Regional Director of the Centre for National Culture, Peter K. Marfo, emphasised the importance of promoting art and culture in national development. He remarked “we have a responsibility to harness our cultural assets and products to drive economic growth, promote art and culture, create jobs, boost tourism and improve the standard of living for our people.” He further encouraged patrons to support local artists and artisans by purchasing their works.
The event was attended by several dignitaries including the Ashanti Regional Directors of Ghana Tourism Authority, Kumasi Zoological Gardens, and Ghana Export and Promotion Authority, Coordinating Director of Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly, rep from the Prempeh I International Airport, lecturers and students from the Kumasi, among others.
