As the New Patriotic Party (NPP) gets ready to choose its next flagbearer, more than 60 Members of Parliament (MPs) from the party have visited former Vice-President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia to show strong support for his expected bid to lead the party in the 2028 general elections.
The MPs, who came from across the country, met Dr. Bawumia at his office on Thursday, June 19, 2025. The meeting was held behind closed doors.
Their visit comes shortly after the NPP announced that its presidential primaries will be held on January 31, 2026. This date was agreed on during a National Executive Committee meeting on Tuesday, June 17. The early decision is meant to give the party enough time to prepare for the elections and unite behind a new leader.
Dr. Bawumia was the NPP’s flagbearer in the 2024 elections and is widely expected to contest again.
According to JoyNews sources, the MPs used the meeting to urge Dr. Bawumia to officially declare his intention to run. One MP, who did not want to be named, told journalists, “We believe he is still the best hope for our party’s future, and we are ready to support him all the way.”
The visit is seen as a strong sign of support and shows that Dr. Bawumia still has solid backing within the NPP. Although he has not yet confirmed whether he will run, many believe Thursday’s meeting marks the beginning of his campaign for the 2028 elections.
