Former Ghana international Hans Adu Sarpei has warned that the Black Stars opening match against Panama will be their most difficult challenge at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.Speaking to Joy Sports, the veteran defender cautioned against the growing narrative that the Central American side represents an easy three points for Ghana.Sarpei believes the immense pressure to win the opener makes it more dangerous than subsequent fixtures against England and Croatia. He suggested that if Ghana manages to secure a victory in Toronto on June 17, they would only need a single point from their remaining group matches to advance to the knockout stages.I think everybody is saying we need to win against Panama, but I would say this is the most difficult game because everybody is thinking we’ll get the three points, and then against England and Croatia, we need one point. I think we will go to the next stage. The Black Stars enter the tournament during a period of significant transition. Following a disappointing international break in March 2026, which saw heavy defeats to Austria and Germany, head coach Otto Addo was relieved of his duties.Sarpei has previously noted that the current squad lacks the long-term cohesion seen in the 2010 team, making the psychological hurdle of the Panama game even steeper.
