Ghana’s Minister of Interior, Muntaka Mubarak, has announced a nationwide six-week gun amnesty aimed at retrieving illegal firearms that have increasingly found their way into schools, workplaces, funerals, festivals and other public spaces. Speaking at a press conference in Accra on Tuesday, the Minister warned that the spread of unregistered weapons has fueled a worrying rise in armed robberies, murders, and violent confrontations across the country.

The gun amnesty, which runs from 1st December 2025 to 15th January 2026, allows anyone in possession of an unregistered or illegal firearm to surrender it to designated security points without fear of arrest or prosecution.
From 1st December 2025 to 15th January 2026, the public can surrender unregistered guns without arrest or punishment. The Minister says anyone who turns in a weapon will be recognized as a patriot helping keep Ghana safe.
