Legendary Jamaican sprinter Asafa Powell has expressed confidence in Ghanaian sprinter Benjamin Azamati to win medals at the World Athletic Championships in the future following his outstanding performances on the tracks.

Azamati has proved to be one of Ghana and Africa’s best athletes in recent years with significant achievements. He succeeded in breaking a 22-year-old national record and has been honoured on a number of occasions.

He broke the national 100m record twice, first with 9.97s to break Leo Myles Mills’ record of 9.98s, and again with 9.90s at the Texas Relays.

Powell told the media that Azamati’s progression and refinement indicate that he has what it takes to win medals for Ghana.

“I don’t know Azamati personally, but I know of him,” Powell said.

“He’s very talented and you can see that for yourself. I’m sure he was running when he was in Ghana, but he wasn’t getting to that level and then he left to the USA. All of a sudden, he’s running fast. So you can imagine [what will happen] if you had the same coaching and attitude here in Ghana, you would be making lots of stars,” he said.

“Once you’re running sub 10, you are ready to win a medal.”

Meanwhile, Azamati has already started the season in magnificent form running under 10 seconds once more with a time of 9.99 seconds at the Jo Meaker Classic.
