A wave of tension is sweeping across Prampram as angry youth and concerned indigenes have threatened to stage a massive demonstration over what they describe as the unacceptably slow pace in the prosecution of murder charges leveled against the embattled chief, Nene Tetteh Wakah, and eight others.
The group accuses the Office of the Attorney General of exhibiting a lackadaisical attitude towards ensuring a swift trial that could bring closure to a string of unresolved chieftaincy-related murders in the area.
They say the continued delays in justice have left residents living in fear, uncertain of who may be targeted next by those allegedly behind the killings.
Nene Tetteh Wakah and eight others, including his former secretary, Neizer Osabutey, were initially arraigned before an Accra Circuit Court over the October 2021 murder of Nene Aryeh Otuseikro IV.
The court subsequently referred the case to the High Court, citing a lack of jurisdiction. However, several months have passed since that directive, and the accused persons are yet to be re-arraigned before the appropriate court under both the previous NPP administration and the current NDC-led government.
The youth say their patience is wearing thin, warning that the continued silence and inaction of authorities could destabilize this year’s Homowo celebrations, which have been marred by violent clashes in recent years allegedly instigated by supporters of Nene Tetteh Wakah.
They argue that the seeming immunity enjoyed by the suspects emboldens them to commit further acts of violence.
In a strongly-worded petition, the youth questioned why individuals facing serious charges of murder are still walking free, comparing the situation to other high-profile murder cases where suspects such as “Sexy Don Dada” and Daniel Owusu Koranteng remain in police custody.
They further highlighted that during the arrests, weapons including an AK-47 rifle were found in the possession of the accused, yet no meaningful legal action has followed.
The group has called on the Inspector-General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, to launch a fresh investigation into the case to bring justice and peace to the Prampram traditional area.
They are also appealing to the Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Dr. Dominic Ayine, to expedite court proceedings and ensure the suspects are remanded to prevent further unrest during the upcoming Homowo festival.
In a final appeal, the youth urged the kingmakers and traditional leaders of Prampram to resist the lure of money and personal interest and instead stand up for truth and justice to reclaim the integrity of the Prampram stool from those they describe as “bloodthirsty impostors” parading as traditional leaders.
