Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has announced that President John Dramani Mahama will soon hold Regional and District Accountability fora across the country to directly engage with Ghanaians and account for his administration’s actions.
Speaking at the Presidential Dialogue with the Private Sector held at the Kempinski Hotel Gold Coast City in Accra on Monday, Mr. Kwakye Ofosu emphasized that the initiative is designed to enhance transparency and make the government more responsive to the needs of the people.
“They (Ghanaians) are after all, the reason why he’s in office,” the Minister stated, highlighting the President’s commitment to public accountability.
He noted that while the Presidency already conducts regular briefings where ministers and officials update the public on government activities, President Mahama intends to elevate this engagement.
“You may have noticed that at the presidency, we hold regular briefings through which various ministers of State and other officials engage with the Ghanaian public to tell them exactly what government is doing. But His Excellency wants to take it a step further by having regional accountability fora and district accountability fora,” Mr. Kwakye Ofosu explained.
According to him, the President will lead delegations comprising ministers, regional ministers, District Chief Executives (DCEs), and other key office holders to these fora, allowing for direct interaction with citizens at the regional and district levels.
“All of this is aimed at achieving one objective, to make his government better than he even intends it to be,” the Minister added.
The announcement comes on the back of ongoing efforts by the Mahama administration to foster inclusive governance, following the President’s return to office after the 2024 elections. President Mahama, previously served from 2012 to 2017.
Mr. Kwakye Ofosu expressed confidence that the dialogue session would meet its goals, urging participants to provide candid feedback.
“It is my belief that the objectives set for this evening will be achieved by the time we are done. And His Excellency would encourage you to be as candid as possible in your assessment and engagement with him, so that overall, we all look this place much better informed about what policies he has for us and how he intends to achieve them,” he said.
The event at the Kempinski Hotel brought together private sector leaders to discuss policies aimed at boosting economic growth and collaboration between government and industry.
