Ghana has reached a historic milestone with the official declaration of Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang as the country’s first female Vice President-elect.

Her designation follows the announcement by the Electoral Commission (EC) that John Dramani Mahama has won the 2024 presidential election with 56.55% of the votes.

This ground-breaking moment marks a triumph not only for women’s empowerment but also for Ghana’s progressive strides towards gender inclusivity in leadership.

Prof. Opoku-Agyemang’s distinguished career spans academia and public service, earning her widespread admiration for her competence and dedication.

She holds a PhD in English Literature and began her academic journey as a lecturer at the University of Cape Coast (UCC), where she eventually became the first female Vice-Chancellor of the institution. Her tenure at UCC was marked by transformative initiatives that elevated the university’s reputation as a leading centre of higher education in Ghana.

Her entry into politics came when she was appointed Minister of Education under the Mahama administration.
During her tenure, she spearheaded significant reforms aimed at enhancing access and quality in Ghana’s educational system.

Her calm yet resolute leadership style has garnered respect across the political spectrum. Though she and President-elect Mahama will not be sworn in until 7 January 2025, her achievement has already sparked celebrations across the nation and beyond.
