Award winning Gospel minister Perez Musik has once again stirred hearts with his latest release, Sunday School Medley—a soul-stirring collection of familiar praise songs that sprouts deep childhood memories of worship. Recorded live during the 2023 edition of his Glorified Concert, the medley has quickly resonated with audiences for its joyful sound, powerful vocals, and vibrant visual presentation. In this exclusive conversation, in this Q&A Perez opens up about the inspiration behind the medley, the creative process, the technical work behind the scenes, and his hopes for how this heartfelt project will impact listeners around the world.
1. Was this medley recorded live, or was it a studio production?
It was recorded live during the 2023 edition of my Glorified Concert at Victory Bible Church Dominion Sanctuary.
2. If it was recorded live, was the audio captured simultaneously with the video, or were they done separately?
Both audio and video were captured on the same day during the live performance.
3. What inspired your selection of these specific songs? Did their singability and nostalgic appeal play a role?
Yes, definitely. Each member of the team contributed to the song selection. We picked songs that are memorable, easy to sing, and carry a strong sense of nostalgia—bringing us back to our early days in the faith.
4. Who worked with you on the arrangement?
The arrangement was a collaborative effort involving myself, Sponkeys (who also produced the medley), and our behind-the-scenes team. Everyone brought something special to the table.
5. How long did it take to bring this medley to life?
Though it was recorded in 2023, we finalized everything about two months ago. It took weeks of rehearsals, arrangements, and production to shape the medley into what you hear and see now.
6. Who handled the mixing and mastering? Did you personally contribute to the production, given your technical background?
I personally handled the mixing and mastering. With my production background, it was important for me to be hands-on in crafting the final sound.
7. The transition from “My Head, My Shoulders, My Knees, My Toes” into “Father Abraham” was seamless—who came up with that creative bridge?
That creative bridge was largely the work of Sponkeys. He played the most major role in crafting that transition and made sure it flowed musically and energetically. It’s one of the highlights of the medley.
8. Were there any challenges in reinterpreting these classic Sunday school songs to fit your style?
Yes. The biggest challenge was preserving the simplicity and innocence of the songs while giving them a richer, more contemporary gospel sound that fits my style.
9. The instrumentation has a rich, vibrant feel. What sound were you going for, and what instruments played a key role in achieving it?
We aimed for a joyful, Afro-contemporary gospel sound. Key instruments included live drums, bass, electric guitar, keys, and layered choral vocals that gave the medley its warmth and fullness.
10. You featured the University of Ghana Mass Choir in this medley—a brilliant choice. What influenced your decision to collaborate with them?
Their spirit, vocal power, and synergy were exactly what we needed. They brought the right energy and authenticity to elevate the medley.
11. The costuming was visually striking—you wore a gold and black suit, the men were dressed in all black, and the women in gold and black. What went into the styling and visual coordination of the team?
We wanted the look to reflect elegance, unity, and celebration. The ladies’ costumes were beautifully designed by Meg Morrison. There was a solid behind-the-scenes team who worked hard to ensure the styling matched the vision of the medley.
12. Music has the power to stir emotions—what do you hope listeners will feel when they hear Sunday School Medley?
I hope it fills listeners with joy and a sense of wonder. My desire is for people to reconnect with the purity of worship and the joy of those early Sunday school experiences.
13. How do you plan to push Sunday School Medley to a global audience? It truly deserves international recognition.
We’re working on strategic digital promotion, gospel media platforms, and global distribution strategies to get this sound to audiences far and wide.
14. Have you received any feedback from fans or church communities about the medley? What has been the most touching response so far?
Yes! One of the most touching messages came from a children’s ministry worker who said the medley brought tears to her eyes—it reminded her why she began teaching kids in the first place.
15. Are there plans to create more gospel medleys like this in the future? Perhaps a Sunday School Medley Vol. 2?
Absolutely. The response has been incredibly encouraging, and Sunday School Medley Vol. 2 is definitely something we’re considering.
